iii John son of Thomas Corkill/ Margaret Creech Parish Church Oct 1820, married [1] 5 Nov.1842 Jurby (in the Presence of William Kelly & Andrew Joughin) Mary Ann BREW bapt 12 March 1819 Jurby daur of George Brew & Margaret RADCLIFFE, buried 24 Feb.1867 Lonan age 46. 9 children.
John CORKILL married [2] 9 Feb.1868 Bride Christian Jane COWLE daur of John Cowle, 1 son William Henry who d. 1870 aged 1 yr 11 months of smallpox. John Corkill d.21 March 1894 (leadminer, Lonan, Informant nephew Henry Corkill). His estate was left to his wife Christian Jane Corkill. Christian Jane Corkill of Waterloo Rd., Ramsey d.30 July 1912, left whole of estate to Edward James Corkill of the same address (her step son-in-law).
In the 1841 census Maughold, Cottages nr Cornaa Mill, John was with his father Thomas CORKILL 55 Linen & Woollen weaver Isle of Man, his step mother Eleanor CORKILL 60 Isle of Man: John CORKILL 20 Lead ore miner Isle of Man.
In the 1851 census he was in Foxdale (Patrick), 30, lead miner, b.Maughold, with his wife Mary Ann [BREW], 31, b.Jurby, Margaret daur,7, scholar, b.Marown, daur Susanna, 1, b.Patrick. Two sons had been born and died in Marown: John Thomas b.1846, died aged 3 on 21 March 1849, and George William b.1847, died aged 2 on April 7 1849.
In the 1861 census they had moved to 16 GretchVeg, Abbey District, Lonan: John CORKILL, marr., 40, miner, b.Maughold, Mary, wife, 41, b.Jurby, Susannah, daur, 11, b.Patrick, Louisa M., daur, 9, b.Patrick, Jemima, 6, b.Lonan, Eunice E. and John T, twins aged 4, and George T aged 1.
In the 1871 census they had moved to Minorca Hill, Laxey, Lonan, where John stayed until his death in 1894. In 1871 he was 49, leadminer, with his second wife Christian [COWLE], 36, b.Bride, and Louisa, daur, 19, b.Patrick, and the twins John Titus and Eunice Elizabeth, 14, and George Thomas, 11, all b. Lonan.
In 1881 census Lonan, Minorca No 22: John CORKILL, M, 60, Lead Miner, b. Maughold, Christian CORKILL, Wife, 45, b. Bride, Jemima GELLING, Daur, Widow, 27, b. Lonan, Thomas Ed. GELLING, Grandson, 1, b.Lonan.
In 1891 census Lonan, 35 Minorca, 3 rooms, John CORKILL, 69, Gen labourer, employed, b. Maughold, and Christian J., 55, b.Bride.
In 1901 census Lonan 115 Minorca St, Christian Corkill, widow, 66, Bride, speaks both English and Manx, was living alone. She later went to live with her step-daughter Eunice Elizabeth and her husband Edward James Corkill and family in Ramsey. Christian Jane Corkill of Waterloo Rd Ramsey d.30 July 1912… will to Edward James Corkill (of same address) grocer, whole of estate. 19 Nov.1902.
Of John Corkill’s ten children, three sons had died young, with the other two emigrating: John Titus (Titus) to the USA and George Thomas to England, then to Africa. First to leave was Louisa Mary who emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 at the age of 22 – the only person from the IOM on the vessel “St Lawrence”, departing from Plymouth. Jemima stayed in the IOM, but her only daughter emigrated to the USA, and Margaret, Susannah, and Eunice Elizabeth stayed IOM.
