Hello Gillian,
In case you have been confused by the recent discoveries this is how we have ended up. Thomas Goldsmith 1790-1866 [will] & Elinor/Eleanor Skillicorn 1809-1864, tenants of Ballamin farm in Bride, had an only child Ellen Jane b.c.1853 after having been married since 10 Sept 1831 Bride.
Elinor Skillicorn bapt 5 Feb.1809 Lonan was the daughter of Philip Skillicorn 1784-1858 [will] master mariner of Douglas, and his first wife Ann Carran/Cannan 1784-1813 [will]. Philip's 2nd wife marr.1814 Braddan was Ann Quayle who treated Elinor as her daughter the same as her others [1845 will]. Philip marr thirdly 1848 Margaret Oates. Philip's children and their spouses are named in the three wills and can be followed on censuses. His first marriage [12 Jan 1805?] needs checking in the Lonan parish register.
Thomas Goldsmith bapt 21 Oct 1790 Bride was the twin son of John Goldsmith 1751?- 1831 ag.80 [decree: www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/LawsonBMD/twill/1831_003.html] and Catherine Moore 1752?- 1843 ag.91.
The 1841 census of Bride, Ballabin (adult ages rounded, and no relationships given) has Thomas Goldsmith 50 Farmer, Ellen Goldsmith 30, Ann Goldsmith 8, Catherine Goldsmith 90, James Kissack 30 Ag lab, Daniel Gawne 15 M.S., Jane Skilagaueff? [Ancestry] 20 F.S.
8-yr-old Ann Goldsmith was bapt Bride 18 May 1833, daughter of Thomas's twin James Goldsmith and Margaret Quayle who marr.1832 Bride. In the 1841 census they also appeared to be living at "Ballabin" with their other children although recorded several pages after Thomas and Ellen (no other place names in-between). "Ballabin" correctly Ballamin.
There were 12 children recorded for John Goldsmith & Cath Moore although several names duplicated indicates early deaths for some. They marr.16 Apr 1774 Maughold where Catherine was possibly bapt 7 Oct 1753 daur of Ewan Moore & Isabell Corkill who marr.10 Jun 1738 Maughold. Isabell was the heiress of Ballaberna, Maughold, and Ewan was the eldest son of Ewan Moore the Parish Clerk of Bride. The Radcliffes describe their landholdings and ancestry in their Maughold book which you can see in the FHS Library in Peel. They also describe the marriage contract for the couple, which you can see in the Manx Museum [May 1739 no.57]. Their Moore descendants have lived in Ballaberna "ever since" (in 1979).
