Articles of Marriage concluded & agreed upon
by & between John Christian & wife in behalf
of their son John Christian junr. of KK Bride,
and Gilbert Skinner in behalf of his Daughter
Joney Skinner of KK Andrews, as follow
ffirst, It is agreed upon, That the said Young Couple
John Christian & Joney Skinner shall enter into the
Holy Estate of Matrimony at or before Xtmass next
God & the Holy Church permitting the same.
( 2 ) Secondly, It is concluded upon, That the said –
Gilbert Skinner doth give & Settle all his Intack Lands
upon his Said Daughter Joney Skinner ^ & Jon. Christian ^ & to their Lawfull
Issue, in the Nature of Inheritance ; vizt. Half –
of his Houses & Lands in present possession, and the –
other Half after his Death ; the Rent of the whole
being two shillings Six pence. And the sd. Gilbert
Skinner doth give to the said Young Couple half of
all his Goods & Effects movable & immovable in present
possession immediatly after Marriage :
( 3 ) Thirdly, In consideration of the said half of Gilbt.
Skinnerˊs Goods, the sd. John Christian junr. is to give
him the full sum of ten pounds immediatly after –
Marriage, for his own proper use. And the said John
Christian junr: doth also oblige himself that he is worth
in Goods & Mony to the Value of twenty pounds ; And –
if he falls short thereof, his said Parents to oblige –
themselves to make that sum good.
( 4 ) Fourthly, It is agreed upon, That the sd. Gilbert Skinner
& the sd. Young Couple are to live together, and the use
of their Goods are to be in Common betwixt them, as
also whatever they get by their Labour, Trade, & work
is to be equally divided betwixt them ; And what =
= ever money & Goods the sd. John Christian Senr. & his
wife will hereafter give & bequeath unto their said –
Son, John Christian junr. the use & profit thereof, as
well as of all his other Goods & money, is also to be –
equally betwixt them, during their respective Lifes.
And the sd. Gilbert Skinner is at liberty to dispose of
the one whole Half of ^ his ^ Goods at his Death; without
having any right & claim to the Goods & Effects of the
sd. Young Couple will get from John Xtian. Senr. & wife.
( 5 ) ffifthly, The sd. Gilbt. Skinner hath reserved
unto himself his Bed & Bed Cloaths with a Chest
for his own proper use, & to his own disposal as he
Shall think fit at his Latter day.
( 6 ) Sixthly, The sd. John Christian Senr. & his wife do –
hereby oblige themselves to give to their Said Son John
Christian junr. a Bed & Boulster, with a sheet, blanket
& Fledge ; As also the Sum of Nine pounds, in Mar =
= riage Goods. The use of the said muny is to be –
equally divided betwixt the sd. Gilbt. Skinner & the sd.
Young Couple, as long as Gilbert lives; But the –
principal is to belong wholly to the Young Couple
and the sd. Bed & Cloaths.
( 7 ) Seventhly, x Jony x Christian als Skinner (Aunt to the sd.
Joney Skinner the young woman) doth hereby oblige herself
to give her Neece the Sum of twenty shillings, as a
free Gift towards her Marriage Goods. Paid Novr. 2 . 1724
Lastly, ffor performance of all & Singular the
Promises, the Partys concerned do bind & oblige them =
Selves: their Heirs Execrs. Admrs. & Assigns in the –
penalty of forty pounds, after the Nature of all such
ffines in this Island. As witness their Marks to their
Names this 24th Novr. 1718.
