Thanks for your reply Mary. I'm wondering, though, if there was a time when no-one had ever swum across the Bay before, so that perhaps the first time would have been remarkable, or something of an occasion - a smaller version of Captain Webb swimming the English Channel (remember those match boxes?). I can imagine it happening very early in the 20th century, or even in Victorian times.
