Re: Alice Coulthard b.IOM
In Response To: Re: Alice Coulthard b.IOM ()

Geraldine, I mentioned to Eric Gelling that, although there were 2 women named Alice Coulthard who were alive at the time of the 1841 census, I couldn't find either of them on Ancestry. He very kindly offered to look for them on Findmypast. He's sent me an email showing the different ways he's gone about trying to find your Alice (without success unfortunately)

He found the Alice Coulthard who died in Lancaster in 1846 --- this Alice was in Lancaster in 1841:

Eric's transcription and comments:
1841 census at No 100 Penny Street, Lancaster HO107 553 9/41 pg 28

Wm METCALF 30 Cotton Spin’r Yes

Agness METCALF 30 Yes

John METCALF 7 Yes

Jane METCALF 5 Yes [FMP says “5”; Ancestry says “3”. FMP is correct]

Mary METCALF 2 Yes

George METCALF 6m Yes

>Alice COULTARD 70 No [Both FMP and Ancestry indexed it as “Coullard” but I think its “Coultard” because the end of the d goes back to meet the last “l”.]

Betty SHEARSON 60 Yes [FMP says “Shearson”, Ancestry says “Thearson”. Could be either.]

So the only thing you can glean from that entry is that "the other Alice" wasn't born in Lancashire. But was she Alice als Fargher ?

"Your Alice" might have to remain a mystery ---a Manx woman without a birth surname.
