The linkage between the members of the family is largely achieved through the records relating to two houses owned by Esther's family in ("old") Douglas. Also there was a gravestone at Old Kirk Braddan, which was transcribed by the Manx Society and included in Memorial of God's Acre. The following were mostly residents of Douglas.
The 'Founder' of the line was Jony Corlett (born about 1707, died 1798) whose 1st husband was a Cain and second husband William Craine (c. 1697-1771). William bought a house where the public garden is next to the Salvation Army Citadel.
Jony or Judith's three Cain Children were Esther, married one ---Kewley, died without issue in 1802.
John (c1734-1791) a barber or paria-maker of Douglas. Bought the house where Spar shop is in Lord Street 1775. Died without issue 1794
and Isabella Cain (bur St. George's 1808)
Isabella married Captain William Cowley, Captain out of Liverpool. He died April 1810 aged 87. William bought a house and garden where the HSBC Bank is now in central Douglas.
I know of four Cowley children. John, nothing further known.
William Cowley, "house joiner" married a Margaret Kelly, their eldest son was John Cowley; they had a daughter Ann, unmarried in 1843. This branch owned a house close to the Spar shop in Lord Street.
Judith Cowley born c. 1771
mar 11th July 1801
bur 9 Apr 1837 aged 65
married William Kelly of "The Green" i.e. Bowlingreen Road area of Castletown.
Their five children are well documented, and the connection is remembered by J.C. Cannell with daughter Margaret Kelly (1802-1861) who married John Kermode (Sadler) of Castletown. Whence "Kermode the Chemist" I am assured.
Finally our ancestor Esther Cowley, bap St. George's 12 Aug 1772. You have found the marriege to Francis Williams of RMF and also to Henry Kenyon in 1811. Rex Kissack told me that Francis Williams came from the town of Warwick. Made a Sergeant in RMF 1796.
I have a record of Mary Maria being baptised at Ballaugh 9th April 1815. Her father Henry Kenyon's farming stock was sold by public auction at THe Dolly (Dollagh) 1816.
