Hi Tom

Trying to sort out the Robert Sayles born in the IOM in the 1830s. The same four appear in all the censuses from 1841 to 1861. Here's the analysis---- I've copied blocks from the census indices to show that these are the only ones:

the four entries for Robert Sayle in 1841:

5yr old in Douglas is with Thos Sayle 80 labourer, Ellen 30, Thos 15, Robt 5, Joseph 1. An IGI search for baptism of Joseph gives parents Thos Sale and Ellen Corkill (ext) ----surely not the 80 and 30 yr olds ? I can't find a marriage for a Thos Sale to an Ellen Corkill.

5 yr old in Maughold (Maughold 3/7) is with parents John 40 fisherman, Mary (Carran) 35, Wm 13, John jr 11, Catherine 8, Elizth 7, Robt 5, Elinor 3, Isabella 6 months.

4yr old in Andreas (Andreas 1/1) is with John 40 mason, Ann (Cowle)30, Mary 12, Eliza 6, Robt 4, Chas 2, Catherine 2 months

4 yr old in Douglas (Conchan 9/11) is with Eliza Sale 35 and Isabella Sale 3. They're in a lodging house with Ann Oates 50, Mary Ann Harris 20 and Mary Cowle 30. He could be son of Robert Sayle and Eliza Comish bap 23 Aug 1835 Ramsey, and Isabella 3 could be Margaret Isabella----there's a Robert Sayle 34 and a John 12 in Maughold 1/2 who could be the rest of the family unit (John Robert Sayle bap as John Robert Comish to Robert Sayle and Eliza Comish 14 April 1828 Ramsey) Or maybe not.

the 14 yr old in Bride (Bride 3/1) is a farm servant b Bride with Robert Stowell. He's been transcribed as Layle.

The 14 yr old in Douglas (Conchan 4b/56) is a shoe maker with his brother Thomas 22 and Thomas's family, all b Douglas. This is the RS who was age 5 in Douglas in 1841.

The 14 yr old in Maughold (Maughold 3a/9) is a fisherman with father John 52 fisherman, Mary 43 (Carran) b Lonan, John 21, Catherine 18, Elizabeth 16, Robert 14 (has been transcribed as Hebert), Paul 19 (should be 9), James 5. All b Maughold except Mary.

So it looks as though the Robert Sayle bap 13 March 1832 to John Sayle and Cath Ratcliffe died young . The one living with John Sayle and Ann Cowle age 4, 14 (away from home) and 23 seems likely to have been from John Sayle's second marriage.
