Re: Bride MIs: John+Ann Sayle

Hi Ralph

A friend is just starting to research her family history; she's a granddaughter of Philip Sayle who lived in Barrow. I said that I'd check out the information she's been given by a family member in order to make sure that she's definitely looking at the right family.

I'm pretty sure that her grandfather was the youngest son of John Sayle and Ann nee Cowle from Bride. I've looked at all the other Philip Sayles who were born on the IOM in the 1850s and eliminated them, apart from a PS b 1850 Douglas whose parents were Philip Sayle and Ann Cowin. He appears as a 6 month old in the 1851 census but is no longer with his family in 1861 or subsequent censuses, so I think he may have died, although there's no burial listed for him.

I've been looking at some of the other children of John Sayle and Ann Cowle, looking for clues which might link them to Philip. I was pleased to see that your grandfather Daniel b 1849 had spent a short spell in Barrow in the 1870s and then returned to live in the IOM. I see that Ann Sayle nee Cowle was living with the family of Daniel Sayle and (Ellen) Elizabeth nee McFee in 1891 shortly before her death. I couldn't find a definite entry for her in 1871 or 1881.

I've found another son of John Sayle and Ann nee Cowle who I believe went to live in Barrow ---- Thomas b 1845. And a James Sayle b 1843 moved over and settled in Lancaster. There are trees on Ancestry which claim that this James was the son of a different couple, b Maughold, but his entry in the 1871 census at Warton with Lindeth, Lancs, definitely states that his birthplace was Bride, IOM.

I'd be very interested in comparing notes.
