Yes, Philip is the progenitor of the Barrow Sayle family and his older brother, James, had the same role for Lancaster. Interesting in those two making "the great leap" to leave the IoM but most of their descendents are still in either Barrow or Lancaster.
(Lovely word progenitor. My 2nd great grandfather was James McFee, an Irishman who moved to the IoM in the early 1800s and started the McFees on the Isle. A distant McFee cousin used "progenitor" to describe him as every IoM McFee is descended from him. That family tree is dead easy and dead easy to validate.]
You're right in that my grandfather is/was Daniel Sayle. He and his wife did move to Barrow but only for a few years. I suppose being a farm labourer in the Isle of Man was more enticing than living in a two up/2 down & working in the Barrow steel mill. Anyway, my dad was born in Barrow as well as his older brother John James. [His descendents are in Liverpool.]
GREAT CLUE about Ann Cowle/Sayle! It's hard to find information about John's daughters as, of course, women married and changed their names.. or tragically died. Since these women were born before centralized record keeping and there's lots of commonality of first names, I've had to leave their fates blank...
Hmm, I have Thomas marrying an Elizabeth Kneen and having 7 children... all in Bride!? Haven't pursued that line all that much.
I've had contact with a couple of people who enthusiastically laid claim to John Sayle as their progenitor and I could see right off they had made a vast assumption somewhere. Hard to disillusion someone... but I have to say I agree with all of your information!!
My email address is already on here somewhere so I shouldn't be afraid to announce it as I already get more SPAM than real email. I'll be cunning though. It's Ralph#Sayle.ca. Email me and we can swap Gedcoms.
