Douglas Head Hotel
Douglas Head Hotel c.1908

Built 1869 by Thomas Quirk to a design of John Robinson ; enlarged in following years; incorporated the Herring Tower landmark (designed by T Brine and similar to that at Langness). The hotel was demolished in 1999 though the tower was kept and a new apartment block, keeping to external facade, built in its place.

Although it had accomodation the hotel's main trade was to service the thousands of trippers who came to Douglas Head during the heydays of the Island's tourist industry.

Jenkinson in 1874 writes "At the Douglas Head Hotel is a bowling-green. The charge for admission to the green is 3d. each person. There is also a dancing platform, open during the season from three to ten o’clock, admission 3d., a quadrille band being in attendance. Archery, Aunt Sally, and quoits are also advertised as forming part of the amusements of the place. in the rooms of the hotel is a valuable lot of antiquities and curiosities, and on the outside of the building may be seen a working model of the big wheel at Laxey. Persons are allowed to enter the rooms and inspect the curiosities, whether they spend anything in the hotel or not. The tower is built on the site, and partly composed, of an ancient landmark."
See IoM Vic Soc newsletter #32 Autumn 1992 reporting on the court case 5th May 1873 when the builder sued John Senhouse Goldie-Taubman for non payment of the final amount.
