John Graves is supposed to have come from Yorkshire c.1740 he would appear to have initially settled in Douglas (as children baptised Kk Braddan) before moving to Peel and setting up business in a small shop adjacent to St Peter's churchyard. The shop was willed to his wife Jane Wattleworth (and then to his son Henry) by his father-in-law Henry Wattleworth described as the House at the Cross it stood at the entrance to St Peter's churchyard. Henry was the eldest son of Archdeacon Samuel Wattleworth.
Twice married Margaret Maddrell (als Smith als Wattleworth, bp 1711), died a widow, in Peel in 1784 and a memorial was erected in St German's Cathedral by her executors Henry Graves and John Christian of London. Her will left considerable legacies to both Henry and William Graves.

Henry Graves' (1) will detailed the split of property between the children the figure shows the houses in central Peel
Map is 1868 O/S plan of Peel (composite from 2 sheets)
The family home and the shop still stand today (for those with CD version look at Peel interactive map) the home is the distinctive house with the one time classic Manx outside staircase, the shop stands next to the entrance to the churchyard; a house 'newly erected in the grounds' in 1797 was left in the possession of daughter Ann and is most likely that shown.
His brother William was a butcher whose shop (possibly part of family business ?) was on nearby Douglas Street (site now British Legion club) Henry's home from 1783 was adjacent and was a long low building (now demolished) known as Nicholson's house. Henry also owned property in Castle Street , Market street Boilley Spital and at Castletown.
Henry was also a churchwarden of St Peter's - his second wife was heiress of Ballaquane, Dalby.
