Typical format - some initial information taken from Manorial Rolls (in this case the Lib Mon), land holdings from 1867 Woods atlas, jottings from BMD from the local press - then a number of interpersed trees and anecdotal texts. Sometimes I have interspersed comments (shown [.] to clarify matters). In general material close in both geography and time to the period of 1900-1920 in Peel are generally accurate, the further away in time/place the less accurate it is likely to be.
The trees are sometimes over two or more pages and are here rendered reasonably close in format to those in the manuscript - abbreviations heavily used include a = aged, d = died,' =' = married

17.. Alice Leece who M Quane of Ballaquane, Dalby died on Tynwald Fairday when all the family except a gn da - were at the fair. One a/c says she d. on her 100th birthday while another says she was 104 years old. Her last words were "Oie vie, Elan noo" The Leeces from whom descended Sir Wm Leece Drinkwater were of the same stock. a correspondent (descended from the Quanes) says : "Wm Leece Drinkwater [uncle of Sir Wm] and Mrs Salmon [alias Graves alias Quane] were second cousins. Once a vessel of his went ashore below Ballaquane and he came over, Mrs Salmon and he decided their relationship and he gave her a plain gold ring he was wearing" [see Leece p 47] John Quane father of the said Judith and son of [] [] [] was a frequent visitor at the card parties of Sir Geo Moore Ballamoar. One night the stakes were on Sir George's part a pipe of wine and on Quane's a field at Ballaquane. The latter won the game, and told Sir George to keep the wine as he did not want it. The Knight told him he was very foolish "for if you had lost I certaibly would have taken that field" This John Quane, in his old age said "Take me down to Joney's and let me die with her" Joney [Judith] was then living in Castle St Peel, in the house left to her by her husband Graves. John was taken to Peel and died shortly afterwards in the house known to this day as "the Schoolroom".
With all the daughters of John Quane there was only one son, Charles. John Wesley's disciples made a great impression of the Dalby people. A descendant of the Quanes says that Charles was one of the "converted". This incensed Charles' father (who was not at all inclined that way) and the young man was put out of the house and boycotted by the rest of the family and died in another house. But Mrs Narramore (a descendant) says "Chas Quane who died of consumption was a godfearing man, and was instrumental the building of the old Wesleyan Chapel at Dalby, at the Centenary of which someone who was doubtless given to romancing said he was prosecuted by his relations for his attachment to Methodism. Such was not the case. He spent his time at a married sisters, Mrs Quirk of Ballacooil because he was delicate and she was kind and attentive to him".
Another a/c concerning Charles, says that he and sister Judith were devout Methodists and though they incurred their father's displeasure, but eventually they were all reconciled, and that Charles Quane died at Ballaquane. Charles's sis Judith was a woman of very strong character. In her young days she showed thus her religious feeling. One time, when Wesley was preaching in the "old Factory" - now J Kelly's joner's shop on Peel Quay to screen him from the rotten eggs thrown at him, she took off her cloak and held it up to save him from the assault. She was then in her early teens. Later she was a Swedenborgian and one day she and a girl [?] comapnion dressed themselves in white and clambered to the "Peak" on Peel Hill where they remained nearly all day expecting to be carried up to heaven. But no miracle occured. In about 1793 she marrd Henry Graves of Peel, merchant, who dying about four years afterwards left property to her.
H G's will says: "To my son Charles Graves I leave, devise and bequeath on half or moiety of the house and concerns which I purchased from John Cain of Largydoo, the other half or moiety thereof being settled by me on his mother. And I likewise further bequeath to him the sum of twenty five pounds British. Also, to my daughter Ann Graves I leave, devise and bequeath my house adjoining the Churchyard wherein Mary Witham now resides and its appurtances together with the sum of twenty five pounds British .... And I do recommend to my wife and children to reside together as they think it is for their mutual comfort convenience and advantage so to do
[page 7]
The will was dated 6th Nov 1797. Signed by Henry & Judith Graves, witnessed by Tho Costain & Patrick Cannell. The Will goes on with "In addition to my will made this day, I leave and bequeath to my daughter Jane Graves my concerns in Peeltown, lately purchased from Joseph Cannell together with the sum of thirty pounds British and in case of her death before marriage or the age of twenty one years that the said legacy is to go and be applied in the same manner as the legacies left to the children of my present wife share and share alike" In the first part of the sd will whereiun the testator leaves legacies to his children by his former wife, it says "Also, I give, devise and bequeath to my son Henry Graves my part or share of the house adjoining the churchyard and of the yard and appurtenances thereunto belonging (the other half or share thereof having been given to him by his mother) but he is not to take or enjoy the said part of share of the said house if he should prevent his sister Ann Graves from peaceably possessing and enjoying a house lately erected upon the yard which formerly belonged to the said house but in that case his said sister Ann Graves is to have possess and enjoy the said part or share of the said house bequeathed and devised to him as aforesaid."
This last mentioned house was the ancient house of the Graves, afterwards "Charles Sail room" and now Sayle's paint shop. It still belongs to the Graves family The house adjoining was afterwards sold by Ann Graves. I don't know where the house that Jane Graves inherited stood. The house "purchased from John Caine" which went to Mrs Judith Graves and her son, in the large building adjoining the "Dale House" in Castle Street, which afterwards descended to two daughters. Ann (Mrs Lace) and then to Ann's dau Mrs Kelly and finally to Mrs Kelly's dau Maggy who sold it to the estate of late Wm Higgins.
About 1803 Mrs Judith Graves mard secondly Joseph Salmon who deserted her. Afterwards Mrs Salmon, alias Graves, alias Quane, took a strong dislike to the male sex, which antipathy wasnt seen ? to male animals. This probably was caused by Salmon running off as did Lowry from his wife (the sd Jane Graves) and later Towers from his wife Jane Lace (her gr da) Strange to say this conduct was repeated in later years by Sedgwick when he deserted his wife Annie Cain (Mrs Judith's gt gt gr dau) Judith's grand daughter Catherine had had two illegitimate children and Judith and she would rather rear half a dozen bye ? children than see Catherine married. Catherine on her knees swore she would never marry. She married the year after her mother died. When Mrs Judith Salmon died she left the farm Ballaquane to the said Catherine instead of to Catherine's mother who was the next heir at law; but the old lady feared that Cath's mother (Mrs Lace) would ruin the estate being fond of a drop and fond of having todies about. However she Mrs Lace was left £40 a year "out of Ballaquane".
The said Catharine Lace married Wm Gell, her cousin, who at the time was the heir of the neighbouring farm Balleby and when Gell died he left Ballelby to his eldest son Walter and Ballaquane to the younger son Radcliffe. Some years later Walter becoming weak minded through softening of the brain was persuaded by Radcliffe to pass Ballelby to the later and to receive in return £1 a week, when he got possession he never fulfilled the conditions, and poor Walter for many years has been going about with empty pockets. Writing about the above mentioned husbands running off and leaving their wives I forgot to say that John Lace did the very same thing to his wife Ann Graves. He was a sailor and having turned up in Peel - but not to his wife - he was met on the Quay by his daughter Catherine who "blackguarded" him unmercifully
