Peel Public House licences 1821 - 1858

Transcribed from the Castle Rushen papers in Manx Museum which have recently been sorted and amongst them are the annual list of applications (and approvals) for Public House licences (though not all years appear to have survived). Those for 1821-1858 are given here - more may be added. They are in the form of an annual list (no consistent order emerges) sent by the High Bailiff to Castletown around October of each year to cover the following year. The entry gives the sequence number in the list

No location of the property is given.

Note names normalised, and first names expanded - the spellings of the names varies from one year to the next.

From 1823-57 separate licences needed for ale, wine and spirits; w = wine; a = ale only (default ale + spirits); p = private (consumption off premises) - Brewer's licence cost £5 indicated b (only a few years are shown - Peel generally had 2 breweries).

A 1780-1810 list is available (lists for 1811-1819 are missing)

The following names are included - full details on CD_ROM only
