Re: STRAND/SAND STREET, RAMSEY
In Response To: Re: STRAND/SAND STREET, RAMSEY ()

Thank you Sue - these were two different streets I gather.

I'm attempting to determine if my 2nd grt grandmother (Mary Ann Monk b abt 1834 Ramsey), was the d/o George Monk and Ellin/Ellinor Kenyon/Kennion. There is no marriage located for George and Ellen, and his Will indicates he died a bachelor.

The IGI records a Mary Ann Kennion ch 1834 d/o George Monk and Ellen Kennion (baptised under her mother's name), which leads me to believe she was illegitimate? Also the brother of Ellen Kennion/Kenyon (Edward Kenyon) was a relatively wealthy and important man in his community, but there is no sign of Ellen's presence in Edward's life. Edward Kenyon's Last Will & Testament includes inheritances of property to many people, but Ellen's name is not mentioned. If Ellen bore an illegitimate child this could well be the reason, and she was being ostracized by her family and the community. In 1851 her daughter (Mary Ann) was living with Ellen's parents, while George Monk (the father? of Mary Ann), was living elsewhere.

The 1851 Ramsey census has an entry for a John Garrett, wife Ellen and son Edward, residing on "Sand" Street. Ellen's place of birth is shown as Ballaugh, which agrees with the christening record.

In 1841 George Monk was residing at "Strand" Street in Ramsy; in 1851 Mary Ann is residing with her grandparents (Martin Kenyon & wife Margaret, nee Clague).

A very long shot, I know, but I was thinking that perhaps the similar street names might have been another clue as to the relationship between George Monk and Ellin Kennion/Kenyon. It appears that it is not, however, if there was in fact two different streets. Will have to come up with another angle I guess....

Thanks for your input Sue - much appreciated.
