Re: Mysterious Joughins of Jurby

First I must hasten to apologise to Bruce for calling him Brian, twice. I suppose that when thinking about an IoM census, Brian Lawson’s name is not far in the subconscious.

There is another mistake in my message. At the bottom I should have referred to Catherine (b 1843), not 1837.

Sue queries those strait-laced quarterland farmers. As she knows, 1811 Daniel of Ballaquark was my great-great-grandfather, and although we know a lot about him, not a whiff of impropriety has come down through the family. The same cannot be said of his bachelor son Willie, who fathered an illegitimate son. I’m also reluctant to implicate the Rhenab man, although his sister did have a number of illegits.

Sue asks about Daniel Joughin, bapt 1 April 1816, son of Daniel J and Catherine Kneale. This is my note of his father’s will.

To my daughter Catherine the wife of John Criggall 1/-
To my wife Catherine Joughin all my houses and lands adjoining the shore in Kirk Bride, and the residue of my estate, and I appoint her my sole executrix

Witnesses: William Joughin, Ballaragh; John Paton, Port Cranstal
Proved 13th December 1870.

Daniel was buried on 21st December 1866, so he must have marked this will with almost his dying breath. It took another four year to prove, unusually long for the IoM. Daniel lived at Cranstal, hence the lands adjoining the sea. Note William Joughin of Ballaragh – we’re back in Lonan again, although this Daniel comes from the line from Crosby, Bride, whereas my chief suspect, with the in-laws at Ballaragh, comes from the line from Rhenab, Maughold, the two going back separately at least to the start of the parish registers.

The other Daniel that Sue mentions, 1819 son of William J and Jane Hogg, was a first cousin of my suspect 1819 Daniel. Sue’s 1819 Daniel, the one that married Margaret Callow in 1855 (that was at Braddan), enjoyed an earlier relationship with Catherine Corlett, who bore him Ann Joughin (1837/8-1853), followed by triplets Daniel, Isabella and Margaret Joughin, all baptised at Maughold 18th September 1841. Catherine Corlett later married Ewan Kissack. I take the point about the occupations. Are we going to pin two more illegitimate births on this Daniel, in 1873/8 and 1843?
