Mysterious Joughins of Jurby
In Response To: Re: missing marriage ()

Bruce, this is a brilliant piece of detective work, following these characters with their changing names, taking liz’s Mrs. Myra Crennell back to her mother, Catherine Joughin, and grandmother Margery. Before we speculate on who Catherine’s Joughin father might be, could we clarify what we are saying about Margery. She was born Margery Teare in about 1806. In 1826 she married John Garret. Then, presumably as a widow, she gave birth in 1843 to Catherine, on whom she bestowed her maiden name of Teare. Then in 1845, aged almost 40 with toddler, she married Patrick Cowle, aged no more than 23. Is that right?

Brian Lawson’s website lists many burials of John Garretts. Which were the two that you had picked out?

I hope you can help here, as this extraordinary story is worth pursuing.
