I feel I should comment about your statement that Hugh Kaighin "changed his name". I rather think that what actually happened was that the non-Manx speakers in Ohio couldn't deal with the Manx accent, wrote what they thought they heard, and eventually it turned into "Carn", and that Hugh and his descendants just kind of gave up on correcting people. OR they weren't aware that the written name was coming out something different than they had always known. I'm not sure, in that time period, if people were too concerned with oversight of official records. Anyway, I seriously doubt if it was a conscious act to "change the name". You will note that in 1870 he is "Hugh Caighin". Ann's obit in the Telegraph is "Nannie Karn"
