Re: Calling all Kaighins
In Response To: Re: Calling all Kaighins ()

Philip,

I believe you’ve got a couple things switched around. And It’s funny you bring this line up because I just worked on this one last night. There are five wills on Brian Lawson’s site that I’ve identified from this family. They are:

Generation 1
1797 Jane Kaighin als Killey (or Kelly) wife of Thomas
http://www.telusplanet.net/lawson/twill/1798_019.html

Generation 2
1838 Elinor Kaighin als Moughtin wife of Thomas (c.23Oct1755)
http://www.telusplanet.net/lawson/twill/1838_012.html
Incidentally, this will was witnessed by Andrew Joughin
1849 Thomas Kaighin (Husband of Elinor Moughtin)
http://www.telusplanet.net/lawson/twill/1849_005.html

Generation 3
1870 Thomas of Close Rhenny, Ballaugh (c.28Feb1790) Husband of Ann Callister
http://www.telusplanet.net/lawson/twill/1870_006.html
1879 Ann Callister “Widow of the Close Rhenny”, wife of Thomas
http://www.telusplanet.net/lawson/twill/1879_006.html

So after crossing the information with the IGI records and burial records, this is how I have the pedigree:

I have to start with Generation 2 to because Jane Kaighin (c.19Sep1794) married John Kaighin (c.8May1791) so I’ll start with John’s side.

Generation 2 (John’s side)
John Kaighin (unknown) m. Margaret Christian (m.12Jan1787)

Children (all born Jurby):

Mary (c.22Feb1789)

William (c.26Apr1793)

Thomas (c.28Jul1796)

James (c.24Jan1802)

Generation 1 (Jane’s side)
Thomas Kaighin (unknown) (d. prior to 31May1791, not mentioned in Jane’s will) m. Jane Killey (m.23May1747, w.31May1797, executed 19Jun1798)

Children

Jurby. Thomas will executed 27May1870. Buried 4May1879, Jurby.

William (c.7Jul1793) Married Ann Corlette 12Jan1820. William mentioned in

parents will. Ann died two weeks after last daughter Jane born. Ann

buried 14Jun1828 Jurby.

William James (c.10Sep1843)

Edward (c.14Jun1857)

Children of Thomas and Ann Callister

Dates of birth unknown. These children are not in the IGI

Thomas (willed Close Rhenny from Father)

Eleanor (Tear?) Willed Close Rhenny from both parents). Sold Close

Rhenny to John Quine 1891.

Humphrey. Willed Croit Tommy Glenshaggle (or Glenshaffle) by mother.

William. Mentioned in father’s will.

Robert. Mentioned in father’s will.

Children of William and Ann Corlette

John (c.16Dec1823)

Eleanor (c.21May1826)

Jane (c.28May1828)

Children of Jane Kaighin and John Kaighin. They apparently moved to Malew

After Elizabeth was born. John was buried Malew 29May1872.

Elizabeth (c.27Aug1826) Jurby

Anne (c.30Jan1831) Malew

John (c.7Apr1835) Malew

Now based on what you tell me, our disagreement is that I say John married Jane in 1824 in Jurby (who you say is his first cousin, which I’ll accept) and you say he married Margaret Crellin in 1819 in Michael. I know Jane married a John Kaighin because of the marriage record in the IGI, and based on the following in Ellinor Moughtin’s will:

“John Kaighin husband of Jane a legatee named in her foregoing will of
Elinor Kaighin of Jurby…”
But how do we know this is the John in dispute? The first child of John and Jane Kaighin, Elizabeth was born in Jurby and the other two, Ann and John, Malew, suggesting the family moved down there between 1826 and 1831. Also checking the burial records, there is a John buried in Malew 29May1872, aged 82, putting his birth in 1790/1. IGI records indicate only one John Kaighin born on the island in 1791, the one born to John Kaighin and Margaret Christian (the two closest birth of Johns were 1788 and 1795). Do you have anything to suggest that this John was actually the son of Margaret Crellin? Also, I’m not doubting that the John that married Margaret Christian is also the same one born to Jane Kelly, but I can’t come up with a definitive link. Do you have something to prove this? I’m also trying to figure out where that first Thomas, husband of Jane Killey, came from. I consider this an “orphan” family since I can’t seem to find a link to the rest of the Kaighins.

I’d love to see what you have as far as records. Send me an email at gregkaighin.hawaii.rr.com. (replace the "." with @.) Thanks.
