Re: GELLING of Lonan
In Response To: GELLING of Lonan ()

Margaret GELLING, bp 19 Aug 1798, was the first child of John and Margaret GELLING als SCARFF of Lonan. She married Matthias CALLOW 14 Dec 1819 shoemaker at Onchan. Matthias was bp 24 Dec 1797 Onchan, son of John CALLOW and [unknown]).

Matthias & Margaret CALLOW had 8 children that I know of, 7 of whom were born on the Island and the 8th was born in Liverpool. This suggests that they moved about 1839 or 1840.

In 1841 they lived at Soho Street, Liverpool.
In 1851 they lived at 43 Crown Square, West Derby.
In 1861 they lived at 4 Botanic St, West Derby.
In 1871 they lived at 13 Back High St, Liverpool.

Matthias CALLOW was a Shoemaker, but in 1871 he is a Locomotive Cleaner.

Margaret died 4 Dec 1873 age 75 in Liverpool. Matthias died in 1877 age 79. They had 54 years of marriage.

I have found the following CALLOW children baptized at Douglas St George:

1. Ann bp 21 Oct 1821. In 1841 she likely is the person listed as "Jane" 15 Boot Binder, living with parents. She married John MARKS in late 1841 in Liverpool. In 1851 they are at No 2 Court Bk Reushaw St, Liverpool, where John is age 29 Shoemaker b Liverpool, Ann is 29 b Isle of Man, children Ann 8, Margaret 5, Ellen 3 and John 7 mos. all born Liverpool. Ann was widowed by the 1861 census where she can be found living with her parents, occupation "Boot Binder", as well as in 1871. She likely is the Ann MARKS age 56 in the West Derby death index for Mar 1875. A quick look at 1861 for the children only found Ann MARKS age 18 Servant in Liverpool.

2. John bp 26 Mar 1826. In 1851 he is with his parents, unmarried age 24 Baker, born Isle of Man Douglas. Nothing more known.

3. Margaret bp 4 Jan 1829. Nothing more known.

4. Catharine bp 27 Mar 1831. She is age 10 in 1841. Nothing more known.

The next three children were baptized in Onchan:

5. James bp 25 Aug 1833. He is age 7 in 1841. In 1851, he may be the James CALLOW Servant age 17 Baker ? [can't make 2nd word out] born Liverpool living at home of Robert WOOD Baker. Nothing more known. There are two James CALLOW deaths West Derby, one Mar 1855 and the other Sep 1856.

6. William bp 3 Jan 1836. He is 5 in 1841. There is a William CALLOW age 15 Baker ? born Liverpool immediately under James CALLOW listed above. In 1861 he is 25 Labourer living with parents. In 1871 he is 35 a Wood Porter living with parents. By 1881, he is 45 living with his brother Edward. In 1891 William CALLOW is an Inmate at the Liverpool Workhouse age 52 Cotton Porter. He's still an Inmate there in 1901 age 58 Wool Porter. He did not marry.

7. Eleanor bp 11 Feb 1838. She is 3 in 1841. Nothing more known. She may match the death entry for Mar 1848 West Derby.

They must have moved between Eleanor's 1838 baptism and 1841. The last child is:

8. Edward bp 21 Feb 1841 at St Peter Liverpool. He is age 4 months in 1841, 11 Scholar in 1851, 20 Fireman in 1861 living with parents. Edward CALLOW married Sarah Jane GELLING, his first cousin, daughter of William GELLING and Catharine nee KEWLEY on 31 July 1866 at St Jude West Derby. Edward died abt Jun 1910 and Sarah Jane died abt Mar 1890. They had 4 children:
