It has been suggested that I summarize this family, so here goes.
John GELLING married Margaret CLAGUE als SCARFFE 26 May 1798 Lonan. They had 4 children all bapt at Lonan Church:
1. Margaret bp 19 Aug 1798
2. John bp 30 Aug 1801 (baptism mistakenly has the surname as CLAGUE instead of GELLING)
3. Jane bp 12 Aug 1804
4. William bp 16 Apr 1808.
John GELLING was baptized 2 May 1773 in Lonan, son of David GELLING & Bahee als CHRISTIAN. He acquired Glen Gawne in Lonan 23 July 1812 (Liber Vast ). In the 1841 census he is described as a Weaver. John GELLING was buried 21 Nov 1847 in Lonan aged 74.
Margaret SCARFF was baptized in Jan 1774 in Lonan, daughter of John SCARFF & Margaret als KILLIP. She married first Thomas CLAIGUE 16 Jan 1794, son of Thomas and Jane CLAIGUE (I don't know Jane's maiden name). Witnesses were John KILLIP and Edwd CAIN. Thomas died only 5 months later, 15 Jun 1794 age 21. Margaret then married John GELLING 26 May 1798. Witnesses were Joseph CLAIGUE & Edwd CAIN. Margaret died 9 Feb 1861, age 87 of "Balle-gawne-glen". She had been living with her son John and his family, who took over Glen Gawne after her husband John Sr. died.
Under this note, I'll attach notes for each of the children. Later, I'll try to write some more for other related branches, depending on how much time I have to do it.
I haven't researched very much outside my own family, so I know little about GELLINGs that don't tie into this group. It's always been a "fun project" for the future, but I have a feeling that I'm never going to get to it. So, for whoever does it, I hope this note and the other ones I'll be posting will help.
Yours truly,
Eric Gelling (Victoria BC)
Great-great-great grandson of John & Margaret GELLING of Lonan, via their son William.
