What do we hold dear about them? The pure fact that they are uniquely individual and do neatly pinpoint our origins to a small island. A fact that not people can lay claim to these days. I am incredibly proud of my surname - even if it does mean having to go through the laborious task of spelling it - its worth it for its individuality. From early childhood I have been told of my surname's meaning and of its origins. Not sure if this is a general saying, or maybe just a family one - but both my father and grandfather would say that you couldn't keep a Kneale down!
