Re: Early Kaighin/Kain/Cain
In Response To: Re: Early Kaighin/Kain/Cain ()

Greg & Frances,
In a very early New Jersey history of Gloucester, Atlantic & Camden, NJ it lists a John Kaighn as buying 455 acres on Dec. 14, 1696 from Robert Turner. In a booklet titled "Gloucester County Under the Proprietors" by Frank H. Stewart on page 19 it lists John Kayn as marking trees (first of the fourth month 1689) for the division of the counties between Burlington & Gloucester. On page 41 of the same booklet it lists John Kaighn as a justice (December 2, 1698) of the bench.
The reason I thought the two names were closely related is that one of the indexes for the History of New Jersey Archives refers searchers to check under the name Kaighn when looking for Cain/Kain.
In "New Jersey Colonial Documents" on page 214 of Volume 41 is a will listed for John Kaighn of Chester, Burlington County, New Jersey. One of his heirs is John Kain Jr. And both spellings are used for other heirs in this will dated May 11, 1812. Very confusing. Alot of the information that I am finding here in America seems to point to the Isle of Man. I have nothing specific though for my Nicholas. This is just an alternate avenue that I'm trying. I have run out of other options. I'm now doing process of elimination of Cain families in the area of my Nicholas.
