not sure I would agree with Nicholas being that uncommon - have many examples in Germal baptisms c. 1720's including a Nicholas son of Nicholas Cain in 1726 - must admit however that most Nicholas's appear to be sons of a Nicholas ! However Cain is I believe found in Irish names.

But like you I'd love to hear of early American landrecords of Kaighens as early emigration is not well documented.
