Frances,
Actually, there exist many anglophobes here in the US. Your assertion may have been based on societal organizations, government structures, traditions, etc. However, the general population does include many an anglophobe. I used to work as a restaurant server back in my days as a student in my native NYC, and always clenched up when a tourist from England sat down for a meal. My general experience with the english were that they had high expectations (which is a good thing), and enjoyed a good meal, but simply disagreed with with the custom of tipping. I would say an overwhelming number of guests (90%- we researched this and kept impeccable statistics, because the government considers a server's sales to be taxable income and thus they are responsible for the taxes) refused to tip a server for excellent service, simply because they disagreed with the custom. This does not speak for the entire population of England, but a good cross section of them. It's not a personality flaw, just a cultural compliance one, and one reason why a large group of people in America (not necessarily Americans, as the sevice industry here employs a large number of alien workers, and it is also the largest employer of workers in the states) may be anglophobic.
