The above message was supposed to be titled "Esther Gelling" but I forgot to change it. This one is about Edward Gelling, Master of the Royal Navy. As I said above, I can't find any relationship between them.
Edward fits well on dates to be the one baptized 29 Apr 1786 Braddan s/o Thomas Gelling (a Baker and Flour Merchant in Douglas) & Mary Quark who married 18 Jul 1779 Lonan. (note that this relationship isn't proven but there are no other reasonable matches). He married Mary Shaw 11 Aug 1816 Braddan and they had 4[?] children, Edward being the youngest. His mother died Dec 1807 and 4 months later his father married a widow Ann Thomas als Moore and they had 4 children. Thomas died 1835, his widow in 1862.
Thomas is probably the one baptized 29 Sep 1758 Jurby s/o Paul Gelling & Jane Gelling of Camlork and later of Ballavagher, Braddan [or Marown?]. Paul was bapt 22 Jul 1727 and died 18 Feb 1795 at Ballavagher (bd 21 Feb Braddan), s/o John Gelling & Catharine Kelly of Camlork. Jane Gelling was bapt 1 Jun 1740 St Mathews Douglas d/o Thomas Gelling & Alice Smith, and died 14 Oct 1826 Castletown, bd 17 Oct 1826 Braddan. Both families were prominent in Braddan. Thomas Gelling was a son of Captain Paul Gelling & Christian Cannell.
I can take these families back a bit further if it's of interest.
