This string from Sept 2009 appeared again on the board today, so I had a look at what I now have for Esther Gelling, wife of Thomas Craine, and for Edward Gelling 1786-1848 Master of the Royal Navy. I'll write something for Edward separately. Apparently Thomas Craine's father, also named Thomas, was a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy and served Edward Gelling (Manx Worthies 1901). Though it seems tempting, I find no relationship between Esther and Edward.
Esther's parents were William Gelling & Margaret Kneen, md 9 Dec 1797 Braddan. Children:
1. Thomas 1797-1798
2. John b 1799. He's my leading candidate to be the John Gelling who went to Nova Scotia and married Elizabeth Eagles at Westchester NS 1833, with many descendants.
3. Thomas 1801-[?1856]. I believe he's the TG who married Ann Charlton 1823 Liverpool and later married Margaret Bains 1835. He was a Hairdresser and died 1856. 5 children by each wife, the first child was named Esther. The original thought that he was the TG who married Elizabeth Craine 1824 and was a farmer in Patrick d 1869 was tossed because he fitted better to be the one b 1799 s/o John Gelling & Isabella Cavendish.
4. William 1802-1805
5 Esther bp 11 Nov 1804 St George Douglas, md Thos Craine 1826, to USA 1842. Died after 1883 Cleveland Ohio.
6. Elizabeth 1808-[?1896]. Good fit to be the one who md Charles Moore 1833, with issue.
7. William 1810-1849. Probably the Tailor who married Isabella Hogan 1835, 6 children.
The father William seems likely to be the one bp 20 Apr 1772 Braddan, youngest s/o John Gelling & Margaret Quilliam, md 1763 Marown. John was the eldest son of John Gelling & Catharine Killey of Ballamillaghyn, Braddan. William was a Tailor and he died 1853 in Douglas age "79". He's likely the widower who married spinster Catharine Kewley 26 Oct 1841 Braddan and are together in the 1851 census on Church Street in Douglas.
