Thos Craine b1805 Ballaugh

Hi Eric

The Thomas Craine (with grandchildren Margaret 14 and John 11) you found in Ballaugh in 1841 doesn't look like the right one to have been the father of TC b 1805. I didn't record the page, but I think he was a 58 year old nailer or something similar.

I've found a different Thomas Craine b 1776 (father of Thomas b 1805 ? ) in Onchan in 1841:

Onchan district 2a, page 3
Athol St
Thomas Crane 65 Lieutenant Navy Y
Mary 55 b Ireland
Susan Stafford 15 servant b Ireland

Don't know if it's the right one as Jan says that Mary Cowell was born in Ballaugh.

I've copied a bit of the biographical account (from Ancestry) of one of the grandsons of the navigation expert,Thomas Craine b 1805:

****************************************

"CAPTAIN ELMER W. CRAINE, of Manitowoc, is one of the youngest captains on the lakes, but his ability and skill have already won him an enviable reputation. A believer in heredity might point to his case as an illustration of that theory, as his ancestors have been for many generations associated more or less closely with marine interests, and his grandfather was a teacher of the science of navigation. The ancestral home was at Douglas, in the Isle of Man, and Thomas Craine, our subject’s grandfather, resided there throughout his early manhood. He was a man of unusual mental gifts, and his fame as an instructor in navigation was widespread. In the fall of 1842 he came to America"

The ancestral home "at Douglas" ought to be "at Ballaugh" ?

From a 2004 BB message from Jan:

**********************************************

"My Thomas Craine was born in 1805 in Ballaugh, married Esther Gelling(Gellon, 1805) on August 18, 1826, Ballaugh, died in Pentwater Michigan on Auguat 7, 1869. They were the parents of Margaret-1827, Mary Esther-1828, John-1829, Elizabeth-1832, William-1834, Jane-1835, Nessie Jane-1839, Charles-1845 all born in Ballaugh and surrounding area. They arrived here in the states in 1846 but I am not for certain if they left from Liverpool or IOM. They probably left from Liverpool since he was teaching there, he wasn't recorded in the census in IOM in 1841.
His father was Commander Thomas Craine who married Mary Ann Cowell who was also from Ballaugh. Thanks for checking. Jan "

Like you, Eric, I've searched in 1841 for Thomas Craine b 1805 and family, with no luck.

The Thomas Gelling b circa 1800 (supposedly a brother in law of Thomas Craine b 1805) whose family I mentioned in my last message, was taken from the census page attached to the tree on Ancestry.
