Grace, have you seen the following census entry ?
********
1881 England
Kent, Dover Castle
1002/86/page 18
Thomas Seaton unmarried 22 gunner Royal Artillery, b Scotland
***********
If IOM born Thomas Lennox Seaton had a Scottish father (which seems likely) and a mother who was possibly/probably Manx, then he may have spent his early years divided between the IOM and Scotland. Perhaps he had a Scottish accent and spoke often about Scotland, which could account for his birthplace being written on an official form by someone else as “Scotland”.
Or maybe that census entry is for a different Thomas Seaton, one who also happened to be in the Royal Artillery (ref TS’s campaign medals from 1891, sergeant in 2nd Mountain Battery, Royal Artillery, who I’m assuming was Thomas Lennox Seaton since his descendants are in possession of his medals.)
Is it possible for you to give exact information from the inscriptions on all TLS’s medals ? Is there any scope for the earliest medals to be ones which were awarded to Duncan Seaton rather than TLS ?
