My mistake - Robert, the s/o John and Mary Garrett was indeed christened 1797. This Robert married Mary Thomson in 1810 (occupation shipwright). The 1841 and 1851 census indicate dob as 1773/74 and occupation shipbuiler/shipwright respectively. So, he might have been christened in 1797 but I believe he was born much earlier (1773/74), as the census records show. The christening record for John Oates (Robert's father) includes his father's name, also John, but no mother is mentioned.
