Hi David,
I'm still looking at your two William Corkill possibilities from Maughold, and trying to find a way to separate them, so I was interested to see in your reply to Averil that originally you were given a lot of information from Joan Jordon from Invercargill (who named William's father as Thomas). Is it possible to find out from her what she based that information on? Did Thomas appear on a record?
You also wrote "The Creetch- North information I believe would be more accurate , it also ties in with more of the information I have". Would you tell me please what is this information which ties in better?
Also, when you go through your documents for Averil would you please double-check the marriage and death certs for John to make sure there wasn't any information you haven't posted? For example, who was the "Informant" for John's death, and did it give an address for him/her? Also, who were the witnesses at his marriage written on the marriage cert photocopy?
I finally found the old thread from the BB about Thomas CORKILL & Elinor CALLOW whose son William was bapt in Maughold on 12 May 1816. Thomas & Elinor married in Lonan on 21 July 1810. The enquirer was looking for their son Thomas bapt.1813 Lonan who emigrated to the USA. The next two sons were bapt in Maughold (including William).
The other William bapt 28 Feb.1816 Maughold son of Patrick CORKHILL and Catharine CREECH was the one Brian Lawson chose as the husband for Jane Stowell, but like I wrote before, he was looking for a wife for William and may not have considered the other Corkill families.
There were three other William Corkills bapt in the IOM in 1816, one in Ramsey and two in Kk German, so we also need a link to Maughold.
You chose John Corkhill aged 12 b.Maughold as being your ancestor, from this 1851 census:
Maughold, Jalloo:
Household Members: Name Age
William Corkhill 34 Labourer b.Maughold
Jane Corkhill 36 House keeper b.Bride
John Corkhill 12 Scholar b.Maughold
Robert Corkhill 6 Scholar b.Maughold
Hannah Corkhill 8 Scholar b.Maughold
Ann J Corkhill 2
But "John Corkill" was a very common name (like William Corkill). Was his mother's name given in any NZ record, so that we can be certain that this John was your ancestor? Do you have family information that the family moved to Liverpool?
Thanks if you would answer all these questions!
Sue
