- I still can't find the 2005 messages! So I looked up the 1851 census (again?), which has:
Maughold, Jalloo:
Household Members: Name Age
William Corkhill 34 Labourer b.Maughold
Jane Corkhill 36 House keeper b.Bride
John Corkhill 12 Scholar b.Maughold
Robert Corkhill 6 Scholar b.Maughold
Hannah Corkhill 8 Scholar b.Maughold
Ann J Corkhill 2
The IGI has an extracted (from par reg) entry for Jane STOWEL Christening: 03 MAY 1813 Bride, Isle Of Man, Father: ROBT STOWEL, Mother: JANE KELLY.
Assuming that William, being younger than his wife, is more likely to have increased his age rather than lowering it, I looked at the Maughold William Corkills from 1819 back.
The first one SAYS it is an extracted record: Christening: 04 APR 1819 Maughold, Death: 25 AUG 1834, Father: THOMAS CORKILL, Mother: MARGT CREECH. This "Death", as usual is rubbish and an invention of the LDS. Maughold par reg has the burial as "Wm infant Son of Thomas CORKILL Ramsey Aug 25 1834". They wouldn't call a 15-yr-old an infant, and this family lived in Ballachrink, Maughold, not in Ramsey. I have looked for this William before (he was not in family wills), and think he could have been William CORKILL, Killed sinking a well, buried Maughold Sep 8 1836.
Apart from Wm Henry Corkill b.1816 Ramsey, the next Maughold one is WILLIAM CORKHILL Christening: 12 MAY 1816 Maughold, Father: THOS CORKHILL Mother: ELINOR CALLOW.
Also in 1816:
Wm Christening: 28 FEB 1816 Maughold Father: PATRICK CORKHILL, Mother: CATHARINE CREECH
These are accurate transcriptions (by the LDS), and I see your problem!
Patrick's wife Cath Creech was the sister of my ancestor Margaret Creech who married Thomas Corkill (Ballachrink) from the Ballagorry Mooar family. Patrick was from the Ballajora family who had "Dick" as their nickname. He was the son of John "Dick" Corkill and was buried in 1843, aged 69. Widow Cath was at Curragh Dhoo, Maughold in 1851, farm prop. of 17 acres.
Brian Lawson and I researched CREECH many years ago, and I see he has chosen Jane Stowell to be this William's wife. See: lawsonsiom.freevar.com/BLfamily/creetch_north_public.pdf - but he doesn't say why, unless he had discounted (or not looked at) the other William Corkill as being a possibility to have married her. He says he can't find them in 1861. Can you tell me more about the descendants which might help with which William? Did they leave the IOM?
