Re: Corkills from Maughold
In Response To: Re: Corkills from Maughold ()

Hi - yes the Creech sisters both married Corkills, which I explained in one message, but the Corkill husbands were not related. I gave you the separate farmlands their families were recorded in for generations. Corkill was a very common name in the IOM, so this wasn't unusual, and shouldn't cause any confusion. I also gave you the link to Brian Lawson's work, Creech-North, which is no longer on the IOM FHS website. [lawsonsiom.freevar.com/BLfamily/creetch_north_public.pdf] I also wrote that Brian didn't say why he chose Jane Stowell as being William's wife, unless he had discounted (or not looked at) the other William Corkill as being a possibility to have married her.

Your NZ document looks like a different family. Frederick Corkill's son John Corkill married Sarah Jane Powell in NZ?
Is this John Corkill your ancestor who you are trying to trace, and do you think he is the John Corkhill aged 12 b.Maughold in the 1851 census?

If he gave Frederick Corkill as his father in his marriage cert to Sarah Jane Powell then that is a whole new ball game. You need to be certain what the original official documents have recorded (from when he was alive) before trying to search back to the IOM.

Was he John Corkill? Do you have the year and his age on arrival in NZ?
Do you have his marriage cert.? And the birth certs of his children? (If he was the informant his background details will be given.) Do these say he was born in Maughold?
Do you have his death cert?
NZ certs are very informative, and they will supply photocopies which are more accurate than transcripts.

Please let me know which of these documents you have, and why you think his parents were William Corkill and Jane Stowell? And where the Frederick Corkill information comes from?

Sue
