On the old list you could, if you chose, put the person's name under the general Search option along with the topic, and check all words. I just tried JC + 2010, and that no longer works - actually I couldn't even find why they listed the ones found, with no JCs. So I tried Frances + 2010 and a couple came up which had Frances in the body of the message. You will see these on the Recent Searches, which I absolutely agree are pointless.

By the way, reinventing the Boolean logic "and" and "not" as "+" and "-" is pretty weird!
