CHRISTIAN of The Flatt Ramsey

Many thanks, Donna. Jane's burial year might have been partly worn away on the grave stone.

The place name of The Flatt, Ramsey, is particularly interesting, because Constance Radcliffe has written about this family in her book "Ramsey 1600-1800", which should help Elaine confirm and correct the previous generations she listed. CR calls this section "CHRISTIAN The Flatt (or Christian Hommy [Tommy])". The Flatt was one quarter of the quarterland of Ballacowle. CR starts with Edmond Christian who held the land in 1584.

Elaine, this book includes a portrait of "Captain John Christian of the Flatt, 1770-1831."
CR gives a lot of detail about several of the generations, and their marriages, land holdings and businesses, mortgages, and wills.
After Edmond in 1584 she has followed the descendants through land transfers, to Thomas (entered for the land 1597-1635), then William until 1669. William's eldest son John (d.1689) marr. Ayles (Alice) Christian in 1654, and had 3 sons, Edmond the heir who marr. Margaret Curphy, Richard and John. Edmond d.1723, and his widow settled the land on their only son Matthias (1697-1782) who had already received his father's share. He and his wife Isabel Christian had two sons John and Edmond (a Master Mariner), who both predeceased him. There is considerable detail about a number of properties which Matthias made over to one son or the other (as heir, John received The Flatt and other property in Lezayre and Maughold). Edmond traded in the Mediterranean before returning home to marry Jane Curphy of Ballakillinghan and settling down to manage the family's brewery ("See Chapter 3").

At the time of Edmond's death in 1764, his elder brother John, who married Catherine Callow of Ballaglass, was a merchant in Douglas; by 1766 he was in Ramsey. The two brothers had a lot of business problems described by CR, and there were "enormous" claims against John's estate when he died in 1773.

She writes: "Matthias himself, having survived these disasters, was careful in his provision for his grandchildren. Edmond's two sons and two daughters, and John's one son John and one daughter, for whose education he had a particular care..."
"... John had a military career in the Royal Manx Fencibles; from 1806 onwards, he made possible the development of the town by the sale of plots along what became Parliament Street. At a later date his son Robert Oates Christian, who had spent many years in France, became the first Chairman of the Ramsey Town Commissioners."

Elaine, your list of ancestors looks OK up to John, third from the top, who married Alice Christian in 1654 and died in 1689 (according to CR) but the top two need replacing.
You may be able to buy this book 2nd-hand - it is out of print. There is a copy of her book "SHINING BY THE SEA, a history of Ramsey [Isle of Man] 1800-1914 by Radcliffe, Constance, for US$40, on the first website I checked. This would almost certainly continue the Christian family information, as the other one ended in 1800, but I don't have a copy. If you are a member of the IOMFHS they would check the copy in their library for you.

If you are unable to buy or see a copy of "Ramsey 1600-1800" I could try scanning the pages to send you, if you post your email address (use 'at' for @ to avoid spammers), but your own copy would be very interesting to have with the descriptions of life in early Ramsey and the Christians' part in this.
