Thanks Pat - there is food for thought there but my Elizabeth Shimmin married in 1914 according to the ww1 records. I checked her marriage cert and her father William Henry Shimmin was shown to be a carter.

Do you know, if the father was deceased at the time of her marriage would that have been noted on the cert?
