Allison, in an earlier message you wrote that Robert Boyde was probably born in the 1870s. There is a big difference between that date and the Robert I found b.July 1854 - and neither date may be correct for your RB.
There is no point making guesses in IOM records before you have first researched the many US records, to make sure you have the right person. You need his marriage and death certs, and from the death cert look for a MI which might give his exact birth date and place of birth. Full census records would help you find the certs (the one I sent was only a summary). Do you know where he was living in the US? If not, you need to trace back from your parent who was his descendant - marriage cert., birth cert., his/her parent's birth cert., etc., until you get back to Robert's child who was your ancestor, and where he/she was born, and both parents' details given there.
