JV. 33204 - Silverdalec. 1901 (or earlier)
JV. 50956 - Hotel and Entrance to Dhoon Glen, I.O.M.? post 1920 Would appear to replace an earlier image - card dated 31 Aug 1909 - the JV reference number would indicate c. 1905. The later illustration (left) shows passing M.E.R. trams - one heading to towards Douglas has a trailer and a luggage van
JV. 51432 - Railway Station, Douglasc. 1905 Station looks very much same today, except that a row of shops have been built perched above the embankment to the left of the gate.
JV. 59786 - Ballaglass Glen, I.O.M.c. 1907 Ballaglass Glen - No the lady on right does not have two heads, but appears to have moved whilst the camera shutter was open. |
JV. 59793 - Silverdalec. 1907
JV.59934 - Calf of ManThe Calf of Man with Kitterland just visible in the channel
JV. 63080 - Port SoderickThe two huts seen in near foreground are the re-used cars from the Falcon Cliff cliff railway which was rebuilt here (with new cars). |
JV. 63081 - Port SoderickThe attractions at Port Soderick stretched right round the headland supported on iron supports let into the rocks - today just the paths and stubs of rusting iron remain |
JV. 70001 - Marine Drive to Port SoderickMarine Drive was developed as a private road - a tramway was later added |
JV. 70014 - On the Road to Glen Helenc. 1910 The car has registration number MN 97, there is an almost identical earlier card 63100 (c. 1908) taken from the same viewpoint, also with car and bike, though the chimney pot of the lefthand cottage is missing from that view - rather strange that a new image was needed so soon. MN97 was a 10-12 hp, Coventry-Humber presumeably hired from the Manx Automobile Co., Limited, Douglas. |
JV. 70022 - Niabyl Beach, near Peel, I.O.M.c. 1910 Acquired 2001 by Manx National Heritage, the thatched cottages are a well known tourist site, even by 1910 they operated as a tea room during the season (see bench and seats outside). Post 1918 a surplus hut from the Knockaloe Internment camp was re-erected as a ugly woodern cafe/shop next to the small outbuilding. A holiday home was also built about where the photographer is standing. Another Manx Cottage was built along the bay off the picture to the left. |
JV. 73085 - Manx Electric Railway Station, Garwick, I.O.M.c. 1912
JV. 74579 - The Chasms, Port Erin
JV. 74823 - Villa Marina Grounds and Hall1913/14 Villa Marina opened in 1913 - grounds were changed significantly after 1925 with the erection of a pavillion and in 1931 the addition of colonades to the south side (that visible in photo) of the Kursall (by then known as Royal Hall) |
JV. 76526 - Douglas Harbour and Fort AnneFort Anne is seen to the left - the steam ferry is that between Douglas Head and the Victoria Pier |
JV. 76544 - Victoria Pier and Arcade, Douglas1913/14 The arcade around the Victoria Terminal
JV. 82778 - Bradda Head and New Breakwater, Port Erin, I.O.M.c. 1919 A smaller breakwater to replace the ill-fated 1880 one. |
JV. 87112 - Douglas Bay from Port Skillion Baths, I.O.M.c. 1922 Shows a good view of the pool at Port Skillion, also visible is a car of the cliff-railway linking the landing stage for the cross habour ferries and Douglas Head |
JV. 93199 - Harris Promenadec. 1925 Compare this with an earlier c. 1896 view - the Falcon Cliff Dance Hall can be seen in the background, the Pavillion precursor to the Gaiety Theatre can be seen , the original Villa Marina had not been replaced by the Kursaal. The awkwardly sited shelter was removed allowing the tram line to be rerouted on an easier curve. |
JV 94965 - Over Ballig BridgeThe TT races started to appear on postcards and in the collected views in the 1920s (these three are found in 180 Views) Probably dating from 1925. On the TT course between Ballacraine and Glen Helen - note the crowds |
JV 94966 - The Hairpin Corner, Governor's Bridge, I.O.M.Descent into Onchan |
JV 94967 - The Start of T.T. Races I.O.M.There are sidecars waiting to go thus dating it to 1925 (or earlier) as no sidecar races were run after 1925 until 1954. The photo is somewhat deceptive as the road continues under the overhanging commentator's hut. a cup can be seen on the left balcony so possibly this is not a race but a ride past. |
