Methodist Personalities A...

Aitken, Robert, Rev, 1799-1873
Rev Robert AikenOne of the most interesting personalities to have dealings with the Island!
Came to Island for sake of his wife's health; obtained honorary curacy at St Georges but 'converted' to Methodism. Founded and built Eryeton Castle School as well as Crosby Chapel. After being refused admittance as a Wesleyan Minister founded the Christian Society in Liverpool, and later elsewhere. Rejoined Church of England in 1840, moved to Cornwall where a parish was created for him but was in considerable demand as a visiting preacher.

See separate page for a fuller account.
