[From Manx Soc vol 16]

SONG.

BY MARTIN F. TUPPER, Esq.

To the Air of Mylecharaine.

O HAPPY and free!
Ellan Vannin, for thee
The hymn of old time will I raise;
The hymn that was sung
By the bards as they strung
Their patriot harps in thy praise.

Though bright was thy crown,
In the days of renown,
When Stanleys were kings of this isle,
More beautiful now
Is the star of thy brow,
That beams with Victoria:s smile.

Yes, Mylecharaine !
Since Orry the Dane,
Hard masters have kings been to thee.
But under her Queen
Ellan Vannin is seen
The happiest child of the sea.
