[From Manx Soc Vol 14]
" Where's now my frenzy's pompous furniture ?
The turf-built cottage, with its ragged wall
Of mouldering mud, is royalty to me!
The spider's most attenuated thread
Is cord, is cable, to man's tender tie
On earthly bliss; it breaks at every breeze."
There is only one inscription in the Chancel of the Church, to Mrs. Christian Norris and her five children, 6th of July, 1695.
Without the Chancel end, in the churchyard, on a plain tomb, railed in with iron.-" Sleeping in Jesus." Here lieth the body of Thomas Wilson, D.D., Lord Bishop of this Isle; who died March 7th, 1755, aged 93, in the 58th year of his consecration. This monument was executed by his son, Thomas Wilson, D.D.,a native of this parish, who in obedience to the express commands of his worthy father, declines giving him the character he so justly deserved. Let this Island speak the rest.
On a plain flat tomb stone, railed in.-Elizabeth Hyldesley, alias Stoker, wife of Bishop Hyldesley, died 27th February,1763. Mark H., Lord Bishop, died December 2nd, 1772, in the17th year of his consecration, aged 74.
Philip Moore, Norway merchant, and citizen of London; died at Bishop's Court, December 20th, 1728, aged 78.
Margaret Wilks, alias Woods, wife of the Rev. James Wilks, buried June 13th, 1755, aged 31. And three of her children,-Thomas, Deborah, and James.
Mary Gelling, alias Wilkinson, of Nottingham, buried 4th January, 1773; wife of Richard Gelling, schoolmaster of this parish.
On a head stone erected by Bishop Wilson:- John Riddyard, died at Bishop's Court, April 21st, 1738, aged 47; whose master hath here given this testimony of his integrity, that in twenty years' service he never founmd cause to charge him with eye-service, fraud, or injustice.
Gustavus Bradford, late of Arksea, in Yorkshire, died at the Whitehouse the 8th June, 1718.
