Notes

This is the first file in the HO 98 series dealing with the IoM - a thick bound volume, which can cause some text to be lost in the binding. The pages are unnumbered - the page number here is the position of the document in the bound volume. Some documents are enclosed with others - usually noted as [enc].

It is intended more as a finding aid than as full abstracts of each paper.

The dates are ISO standard format year month day;
the key persons are:
Lord Sydney - Secretary of State at Home Office for the northern district, later replaced by George Grenville
George Aust - under Secretary of State, appointed as agent (or contact) for Manx affairs - see collection of letters between him & Smith/Dawson
Evan Nepean - under Secretary of State, took over role of general interface for Manx affairs from Aust
Richard Dawson - appointed Lt Governor under Govr Smith - one (usually Dawson) to be resident on Island, resignation was accepted in 1791 once Alexander Shaw was in place.
Edward Smith - appointed Governor in 1777; he resigned in ?1792, partly because he no longer wished to reside on the Island following his marriage - politically convenient as allowed Atholl to be appointed Governor-in-Chief in 1793.
Charles Lutwidge - appointed by Treasury as Receiver General in 1765, also was sworn in as Water Bailiff - died in 1784 - replaced by a totally unknown G Watts, Wilson was deputy Rcvr-General and Richard Betham was Collector at Douglas.
Wadsworth Busk - appointed Attorney-General of Island in 1774
Duke of Atholl - this is the 4th Duke;
