McCrone to Duke. The bursting of the boiler of the S.S."James Watts" has delayed the mails. Proofs of perjury by Sumner have been sent to Mr.Peel. ‘The pamphlet is gaining more converts and the Keys are doing everything in their power to prevent it being distributed.

McCrone to Duke. recommending that a lease be granted of the fishing in the Santan river,which,not having been leased of recent years has been badly poached. A small piece of land wanted by Mr.Steuart to make improvements (at what is now the bottom of Broadway. A sketch plan shows conditions at that time. N.M.) The "new road to Atholl St." is in course of construction. (No indication of which road this now is is given N.M.)

McCrone to Duke. An application has been made for "the site on which the old Burnt Mill stands." on which it is intended to erect four houses. The greater part of the cottages and houses on the Crescents are either let or bespoke. Properties in Dougles have been let, but lower rents have had to be accepted.

McCrone to Duke. It is stated in the Island that the Duke has sold his interest in it. This has caused much concern against the Keys, and the Strangers in the Island declare that they will not remain a day in it after the Duke leaves.

McCrone to Duke. Work on the slate quarries should commence soon. Good ore is still being got at Bradda, where the men are working up to the chin in the sea. Another valuable lump so far under water that a diving-bell would be needed to get it. At the Laxey mines a vein of pure ore 16 inches thick has put "Masters and men in extacy about it".

McCrone asks for full, instructions as to what he is to do about mines,and describes an inspection he has made at Laxey - where he thinks they may be unduly optimistic.

McCrone to Duke. Mr.Gawne has unexpectedly come into possession of a Bond payable by the Duke. This is unfortunate as "I hate above all things the idea of Gawne holding Your Grace's Bond,especially since you may well believe,he will take great pleasure in putting you to all the inconvenience he can". Mr.Holmes (the banker N.M.) when asked for an advance to discharge this Bond refused to make one "being of Radical principals and ....of the Taubman party".
