W.Pettman to Duke. showing how much less is the figure the Bishop is asking for his tithes than is the value placed on them by others. He has,in fact, seldom asked half their real value, Mr. Forbes of Seafield has offered £15,000 per annum for them, which makes some think the Keys were unwise to refuse the Duke's offer to let them have them for £5,000. |

W.Pettman to Duke. A check of the Warrens in the North of the Island against plans made by Smyth has shown these plans to be quite unreliable. Having gone over the ground with the several tenants he finds that there have been a number of encroachments, and has arranged for a new plan, showing these, to be made by Mr.Cowell who, being well known and respected in the district should be able to do so,though a stranger would be sure to meet with opposition and probably have to face a Manx jury on a charge of trespass. Mr.Cowell's plan shows the Duke's property to be much larger than had been previously reported. |
