J.Pettman to Duke. From what he has seen of the Island he considers that the value he placed upon it was a fair one, while that of Mr. Douglas is rather below than above his own. Manx agriculture is improving, and the tithes should be as valuable as those from any similar land in England. He has received all possible assistance from the Bishop and other friends of the Duke, towards arriving at a fair valuation, and the opposition,he thinks, will soon regret that they did not accept the too liberal offer made to them by the Duke a few years ago. |

W. Pettman to Duke. The non-arrival of Mr.Webster, the Govt's surveyor,is inexplicable unless he is being deliberately delayed by the opposition in the Islend until the writer has left,so that "these strange and cunning men" may influence him to show a lesser value than the Duke's property is worth. Although Mr.McCrone has been able to obtain a fair rent for the lands he has let on the Duke's behalf he has not been able to get a fair value of tithe - the reason for this mortgagees in the Island may be classed as land-owners,for they are seldom redeemed. |

Duke to Pettman. (Copy) He would have liked Webster to have had all the information Pettman "whose integrity and skill are such that I would confide my interests to you were they ten times the extent they are" could possibly give him. But if Webster prefers to work on his own, perhaps hecause he fears that collaberation with Pettman mignt be regarded with suspicion by his employers, then Pettman had best leave the Island. |
