Mylrea & Quayle to Duke. Public opinion has been sought re. the proposal to have a Regiment of the East India Coy. stationed in the Island. It is much divided. The money would be welcome, and the farmers would get a market. But that such a large number of men recruited from "the Gaols and the dregs of mankind" should be let loose amongst a defenceless people while the Kings troops (4 Coys.Royal Highlanders) should leave causes alarm. With respect to Castle Rushen it is believed that before the winter of 1765 there were three Companies of Foot and a troop of Dragoons in barracks there while some had lodgings in the town. But now, though the 2nd Highlanders are there there are many empty houses in all the towns of the Island. |
