Whitehall March 21 1766
My Lords
I send your Lordship's herewith inclosed the Copy of a Letter I have received
from the Master General of the Ordnance inclosing a Report which has been made
to him from the Principal Officers of that Board relating to the Barracks ordered
to be fitted up in the Isle of Man & referring to the Plans made by Engineer
Captain Dawson, of Castle Rushen and Castle Town, in the said Islands; which
Papers having been by me laid before The King, his Majesty has been graciously
pleased to approve of the several matters rtherein contained, with this exception
only, that as the Horse now Quartered in that Island,
are ordered from thence (being judged neither requisite nor proper for the
Defence thereof) the Buildings intended for this reception will be unnecessary.
Your Lordships will therefore please to receive His Majesty's farther Commands
for the further Execution of the Plans, so far as they have met with His Majesty's
Approbation.
I am etc
Grafton
[To] Lord Comrs of the Treasury]
The Barracks had been constructed by August 1766 within Castle Rushen as can be seen from a letter by another visiting Engineer from the Ordnance.
