Just back from a short holiday, and now I can send you the parts of John Qualtrough's Costain info which might help with your quest to find the actual relationship between Thomas B Costain and Lillian. It looks as though they might have been second cousins; ie both great grandchildren of Richard Costain 1775-1856 and Jane Duke 1778-1853.
2. WILLIAM2 COSTAIN (JOHN1) was born 08 Aug 1736 in Arbory, and died 26 Jun 1802 in Ballachrink, Arbory. He married JANE HARRISON 13 Feb 1768 in Arbory. She was born 1744, and died 12 Jan 1821 in Ballachrink, Arbory.

The question is this----is the William Costain b 1812 above (son of Richard Costain and Jane Duke) the same William Costain, joiner, who lived in Maughold and was the father of the Jane whose daughter was Lillian ?
The awkward fact is that William's birth place is given as Ramsey in the 1851 and 1861 censuses.

The good thing is that Henry's birth place is wrong (should be German) which suggests some possible lack of credibility in Williams's given birth place.
The other good thing is that William married Ann, a Peel girl, in Arbory. This lends weight to the likelihood that William's birth place was actually Arbory, and that he then spent the first 4 years of his marriage in Peel, and then moved north to Ramsey where the family settled.
If this William was indeed born in Arbory, then he was an older brother of the John Costain b 1817 who was the father of John Herbert Costain b 1850.
