Thanks for the information. So the John Gelling I'm looking for isn't the one who was buried at OSR in May 1841. Perhaps he'd left the island.
If the 21 year old JG who was buried was the son of John Gelling and Mary Fayle, then he was what Eric would call "a schoolmaster's Gelling" ie a grandson of Robert Gelling, schoolmaster, 1753-1815, and Jane Kelly.
