I have read with concern the inaccuracies in this thread regarding William Garrett. I have pointed these out before to Mary but she continues to ignore the evidence. That is her choice but by posting it on the board there is a risk that others will accept it at face value
All of the EVIDENCE points to the conclusion that the William Garrett who marries Jane Corlett in 1823 is the same person who marries Jane Lace in 1852. He is therefore the son of Edmund Garrett.
If I track the evidence briefly
1.William Garrett marries Jane Corlett in 1823
19/7/1823
Michael
William Garrett bachelor of the parish of German
Jane Corlett of this parish spinster
wit
Edmon Garrett
John Quirk
The witness is probably his brother Edmund (b 1804)
2. On the 1841 census William who is a shoemaker is at Ballakaighin German with his wife Jane and their children including Thomas Garrett aged 10
3. Jane (nee Corlett )dies in 1850 viz
Kirk Michael Burials
Garrett Jane 50yrs Ballakaighen Kirk German
Jane's will confirms her identity
4. On the 1851 census William Garrett shoemaker is again at Ballakaighen German, this time as a widower, with his children including son Thomas who is aged 22 and a cordwainer.
5. William remarries in 1852 viz:-
6/1/1852
German
William Garrett full age widower shoemaker Ballakaighin f, Edmund Garrett shoemaker
Jane Lace full age spinster Ballakaighin f. John Lace labourer
wit
Thomas Quayle
Philip Clucas PC
6. On the 1861 census William and Jane (Lace) are at Ballakaighin. William is now a farmer of 9 acres. With them are the children of the second marriage and Thomas the son from the first marriage, confirming that this is indeed the same William Garrett.
7.When William dies in 1880 his will contains bequests to children of BOTH marriages
By my reckoning this is a pretty compelling evidence chain. When I first saw the alternative which is proposed as fact in the earlier post I spent some time trying to evidence it - with no success.
As always with any research the conclusions are there to be challenged; and if anyone has any evidence which challenges my conclusions I would be pleased to see it posted.
William Garrett b1794 is the son of Edmund Garrett and Mary Kelly b 1794 and based on the above evidence he is the 3rd great grand uncle of my wife.: Edmund Garrett who died in 1803 being her 4xGreat Grandfather. Whilst we have got Mary Kelly back further we are absolutely stuck on Edmund despite years of painstaking research - so if any Garrett researchers have anything we would be most appreciative
