Having done more reading about Hudgeon/Hutchen etc JJ Kneen equates the name with Scottish Huisdean and Old Norse Eysteinn. (Everlasting stone) If this were the case, it would put it in a possible group of names with the element 'stein' which means stone, still being puzzled over:
Stevenson
Stephen
Steen
MacCorsten
Costain
Place-names
Earystane
Ballasteen
and others
So it might not belong to the "Norman Names" group at all?
